Students of Punjab University conducted an interview to find out what influence do people take from media. Media in recent times have left a profound influence on people. As everyone is powered in 24/7 being bombarded by news stories every other minute.
Students are most vulnerable to what they watch and are quick to adapt something that is being followed by people. Fashion that is shown on our media is leaving a negative impact on our society. It is giving rise to an ostentatious society, which the common man can’t afford. Hence, people end up in depression. Young girls are most vulnerable when they see beautiful models adorned in designer wear. They wish to dress up in the same attire but they can’t afford dresses which cost Rs.5000.
The recent craze in lawn has also left the public in a state of frenzy. Everybody wants to own a designer lawn. It has fast become a status symbol to own a deepark parwani lawn or sana safina’s. As soon as the news of lawn hitting the market breaks, women make a run for the shops. However, some people have made sure to stay away from the fashion scene and will not let it affect them. Although there is no harm to follow fashion but it should be within limits. An interesting research that came out of this discussion was that men hardly fall under the influence of media but on the other hand are most affected. One of the guys told that when he goes for shopping he will buy whatever he finds reasonable and what suits him. Rather than run after how a particular actor was dressed up and in the attempt copy him.
Some of the students agreed that they do follow the fashion shown on media as it keeps them up to dated and they find no harm in doing so. Much fashion that is shown on our television portrays trends of the West and has no affiliation with our culture. This is wrong and care should be taken to show things that don’t hurt feelings of a certain segment of the society.
